Sarita Uranovsky, violin and Anna Griffis, viola formed the Sarianna Duo after performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the Tufts Symphony Orchestra on their Austrian Tour in January 2016, a performance they reprised in Slovenia and the Czech Republic in January 2023. The duo has performed at Tuft’s Distler’s Hall and throughout the greater Boston area at numerous venues, and has commissioned new pieces by John McDonald and Kareem Roustom. They perform lesser-known works and under represented composers alongside beloved standards in the repertoire. The pair have started a project arranging the sonatas for two violins by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges for violin and viola.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, violinist Sarita Uranovsky has enjoyed an exceptionally active and diverse career as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, and teacher. She's appeared as a soloist with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (USA), the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (South Africa), and the Tufts Symphony Orchestra in tours of Italy and Costa Rica. She performs in her native South Africa frequently as a soloist and recitalist. Ms. Uranovksy was Concertmaster with Orchestra Geminiani de Fallonica (Italy), the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Concertmaster with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra (USA). A founding member of MONTAGE Music Society, she can be heard on their “Starry Night Project”, released on MSR Classics. She has recorded and broadcast for both the BBC and SABC and has appeared on recordings with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Parma recordings. Ms. Uranovsky performs regularly with the Boston Philharmonic, Boston Musica Viva, Cantata Singers, BMOP, Boston Pops, and Emmanuel Music. She performed for Sir Yehudi Menuhin's “Live Music Now!” while in the UK, and appeared in concert for Prince Charles and Princess Anna at the church of St-Martin-in-the-Fields. Ms. Uranovsky is the recipient of the Ellie Marx Memorial and Du Toit van Tonder Scholarships, and was silver medalist and University of Natal prize winner at the SASOL Music Competition (South Africa). Ms. Uranovsky is on faculty at Tufts University, the MIT Emerson Scholarship Program, and maintains a private teaching studio. She has been on the faculty of the Vianden International Music Festival in Luxembourg and the Saarburg International and Interharmony Music Festivals in Germany. Ms. Uranovsky holds an Artist Diploma from Boston University and a Bachelors and Masters from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
Equally at home on steel and gut strings, violist/violinist Anna Griffis keeps herself busy as a performer, teacher, and administrator. Her playing has taken her to Mexico, Turkey, Austria, Slovenia, Czechia, Taiwan, and across North America and she's performed at the Kennedy Center, Dumbarton Oaks (Washington, DC), Boston's Symphony Hall, Smetana Hall (Prague), and Carnegie Hall. Anna is a member of the New Bedford Symphony (principal) and the Albany Symphony and performs regularly with the Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Emmanuel Music, Blue Heron, Les Bostonades, Odyssey Opera, and Boston Lyric Opera. She co-founded Chicago-based Trio Speranza, prize winners at the Early Music American Baroque Competition, and performs with and is executive director of the new music group Ludovico Ensemble. Anna studied at Lawrence University, The Hartt School of Music, Tanglewood Music Center, and Boston University. She teaches and coaches chamber music at The New School of Music (Cambridge) and Tufts University, and is an affiliate artist in the Emerson/Harris program at MIT. In addition to her playing and teaching, she oversees communications for the Tufts Music Department and is a freelance graphic designer specializing in concert programs and publications. Originally from Annapolis, MD, Anna is the proud product of her public school music program. She now lives in the great neighborhood of Lower Allston with her bassoonist husband and their cat, Pig. She gets excited about fonts, road trips, and diners.
